چکیده

Ensuring the continuity of service in electricity distribution grids at minimum costs is a key challenge many countries, as extreme weather events and fluctuating renewable energy increase. New grid concepts such active networks with distributed resources, or microgrids that can operate islanded mode, offer opportunities to improve reliability resilience grids. This paper presents an network design optimization option transition into microgrid, quantifying improvements, considering faults within well unexpected islanding events, which require fast-ramping resources. Flexibility, both loads used provide services surrounding detailed general model. Solving resulting mixed-integer linear program Column Constraint Generation Surrogate Absolute Value Lagrangian Relaxation decreases computational time significantly. Case studies sensitivity analyses results for targets entailing optimum microgrids, quantify contribution provision reduce overall costs.

A Bi-Level Optimization Approach for Optimal Operation of Distribution Networks with Retailers and Micro-grids

Distributed energy resources (DERs) including distributed generators (DGs) and controllable loads (CLs) are managed in the form of several microgrids (MGs) in active distributions networks (ADNs) to meet the demand locally. On the other hand, some loads of distribution networks (DNs) can be supplied by retailers which participate in wholesale energy markets. Therefore, there are several decisio...

Optimal and Resilient Control with Applications in Smart Distribution Grids

The electric power industry and society are facing the challenges and opportunities of transforming the present power grid into a smart grid. To meet these challenges, new types of control systems are connected over IT infrastructures. While this is done to meet highly set economical and environmental goals, it also introduces new sources of uncertainty in the control loops. In this thesis, we ...

Flexible Scheduling of Active Distribution Networks for Market Participation with Considering DGs Availability

The availability of sufficient and economic online capacity to support the network while encountering disturbances and failures leading to supply and demand imbalance has a crucial role in today distribution networks with high share of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), especially Renewable Energy Resources (RESs). This paper proposes a two-stage decision making framework for the Distribution...

Optimal Resilient Distribution Grid Design Extended Abstract

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and other extreme weather pose serious risks to modern critical infrastructure including electrical distribution grids. Recent U.S. government sources [1, 2] suggest that new methodologies for improving system resilience to these events is necessary. Here, we focus on developing methods for designing and upgrading these grids to better withstan...

Resilient Upgrade of Electrical Distribution Grids

Modern society is critically dependent on the services provided by engineered infrastructure networks. When natural disasters (e.g. Hurricane Sandy) occur, the ability of these networks to provide service is often degraded because of physical damage to network components. One of the most critical of these networks is the electrical distribution grid, with medium voltage circuits often suffering...
